DAY 10

MOSES & THE 10 COMMANDMENTS

Israel, listen to me. Here are the rules and laws I'm announcing to you today.
Learn them well. Be sure to follow them.
-Deuteronomy 5:1

PAUSE
After Moses and the Israelites left Egypt, they spent many years wandering in the desert on their way to the land God had promised them. The journey was long, and they were tired, hungry, and hot. Frustrated, they began to complain. Despite the fact that God had freed them from Pharaoh’s grip and led them across the Red Sea on dry land, they still weren’t satisfied. They said, "God doesn’t care for us! Did He bring us out here to let us die in the desert?"

But even in the midst of their complaints, God showed them His care. When they were hungry, He provided food. When they were thirsty, He made water flow from a rock. Yet, they continued to grumble, trying to find their own ways to make themselves happy.
In response, God called Moses to the top of a mountain. There, He gave Moses the Ten Commandments—rules to help the people learn how to live in a way that honored Him and showed the world they were different. God engraved these commandments on two stone tablets, which Moses carried back down the mountain.

The Israelites agreed to follow the commandments, but God knew that, like all of us, they would make mistakes and fall short. He understood they wouldn’t always obey, just as we often struggle to live up to His perfect standard. But God already had a plan to rescue His people. He sent Jesus, the perfect example of how to live, to show us the way. When we choose to follow God's commands, we express our gratitude for His love and care.

The Ten Commandments are not just for the Israelites—they are for us today too. By following these rules, we show love to God and to others. Here are the Ten Commandments:

There is only one God.
Worship no one else but God.
Use God’s name in revenrence.
Use the Sabbath to honor God.
Respect your mom and dad.
Never kill anyone.
Love the person you marry.
Never steal anything that isn’t yours.
Always tell the truth.
Be content with what you have.
By living according to these commandments, we honor God and reflect His love to the world around us.

DISCUSSION
Why do you think the Israelites complained despite witnessing God’s miraculous actions, like parting the Red Sea and providing food and water?
How do you think following the Ten Commandments can help us live in a way that honors God and sets us apart from the world around us? Can you think of any specific examples in your life?
How does knowing that God had a plan to send Jesus to save us from our sins change the way we view obedience to God’s commands?
How can we support each other in living out these commands in our daily lives?

PRAY
Thank you God for giving us the 10 Commandments to follow. Show us when we are not being obedient to You. Thank you for sending Jesus to save us from our sins even though we fall short of being perfect. Amen.

ACTIVITY
Advent tree & ornaments: If you don’t already have an ornament for today, craft or find an ornament that corresponds with today’s content - Moses & The Passover. Then hang your tenth ornament on the tree.

Family Memories: Ask your kids the following questions:
If your “neighbor” has a toy truck you want, what do you do?
Think of how much you love your “doll”, God wants us to love Him more; If we ask you to pick up your trains and put them away, how does God want you to respond?
Take a video of your kids answering the above questions and putting your 10th ornament on your Advent tree. Then, post your video to the group or tag @summitparkchurch!
