DAY 4

NOAH AND THE FLOOD

Noah did everything the Lord commanded Him to do.
-Genesis 7:5

REFLECT
After the first sin, almost everyone in the world began living in disobedience to God. But there was one man who loved and obeyed God, his name was Noah and God had a special plan for him.
God told Noah that a great storm was coming, one that would flood the earth and wash away sin. He instructed Noah to build a large boat called an ark and promised to keep Noah’s family safe inside. God also told Noah He would send two of every kind of animal to enter the ark.
Even though there had been no rain and people thought Noah was crazy, he obeyed God anyway. Noah cared more about what God thought than what people thought. Once the ark was finished, Noah’s family and all the animals entered the ark, and God closed the door behind them.
Just as God said, rain poured down for forty days and forty nights, and the land was completely flooded. Yet God kept His promise, Noah and his family remained safe the entire time. When the rain stopped and the sun came out, Noah sent out a dove to search for dry land. The dove returned with an olive branch, showing that a tree was growing and the earth was drying.
Noah praised God for keeping His promise. Then God placed a rainbow in the sky as a sign of His new promise, that He would never again flood the entire earth.
Even though people would still choose to disobey God, He already had a greater plan in motion: to send Jesus, who would flood people’s hearts with forgiveness and mercy, giving them new hearts and new life.

DISCUSSION
What things in your life can get in the way of obeying God?
How does Noah set an example for us as followers of Jesus?

PRAY
Thank you, God, for giving us Noah as an example of obedience. Thank you for sending a rainbow as a physical sign of your promise to us. And thank you for sending Jesus so that we can be with you forever. Amen.

FAMILY ACTIVITY
Get a box and pretend it’s an ark. Gather your child’s stuffed animals and have someone pretend to be Noah and walk all the animals into the ark!
