DAY 5
ABRAHAM & GOD’S PROMISE
Sarah became pregnant. She had a son by Abraham when he was old. He was born at the exact time God had promised him.
-Genesis 21:2
REFLECT
Time passed after the flood, but people still weren’t living the way God desired. Yet God had already begun a plan to rescue the world, through one man and his family.
One day, God spoke to a man named Abraham and said, “Abraham, I am going to do something wonderful. I will give you many children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Just as you cannot count the stars in the sky, you will not be able to count your descendants either.”
Abraham struggled to believe this promise because he didn’t have any children. He was ninety-nine years old, and his wife, Sarah, was ninety. But God simply wanted Abraham to trust Him. He said, “Is anything too hard for me? I am going to rescue the hearts of my people. I will make you into a great nation, and through you, all people will be blessed.”
God already knew that one day His Son, Jesus, would be born from Abraham’s family line. Even though Abraham had to wait many years for his son Isaac to be born, he chose to believe and trust that God would keep His promise. Abraham’s faith made him right with the Lord.
And just as God had said, Sarah gave birth to a baby boy named Isaac, whose name means “son of laughter.” When God promises to do something, He always keeps His word. And His plan to bless the entire world through Abraham and Sarah’s family was only just beginning.
DISCUSSION
Why can it sometimes be hard to trust God?
How does Abraham’s story encourage you to trust God more?
PRAY
Thank you, God, for always keeping your promises. Sometimes we might think things are impossible, but we know you are always faithful. Thank you for giving us your only son.
FAMILY ACTIVITY
Go outside and look at the stars. Can you count them all?
When you come back inside, make hot chocolate to warm up. Talk with your family about God’s promise to Abraham and tell your children that God has a wonderful plan for them too. They can trust in Him because He always keeps His promises.
