DAY 6
THE OFFERING OF ISSAC
Abraham answered. 'God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering...'
-Genesis 22:8
REFLECT
Abraham was a man who loved and trusted God. But did he trust God with his whole heart? God had blessed Abraham in many ways, but now He was asking Abraham to worship Him even when it was difficult.
God said, “Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and show Me how much you love Me by giving him back to Me as a sacrifice.” God was asking Abraham to give up the very thing he had prayed and longed for—his son Isaac.
Even though it must have broken his heart, Abraham remembered God’s goodness and faithfulness. So he obeyed. Early the next morning, Abraham took Isaac and began the journey to the mountain where God told him to go. Abraham believed God’s promise that Isaac would grow up and have a family. He trusted that somehow, they would both return from the mountain together.
As they walked, Isaac asked, “Father, where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”
Abraham replied, “God Himself will provide the lamb for the offering, my son.”
When they reached the place God had shown them, they built an altar together. Abraham didn’t understand why God was asking him to do this, but he remembered that God was bigger, stronger, and better than anything in the whole world. Even if Isaac died, Abraham believed God could bring him back to life.
Just as Abraham lifted the knife, God called out from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham! Do not lay a hand on the boy. Now I know that you love Me more than anything, because you have not withheld your only son from Me.”
Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught in the bushes. God had provided the sacrifice! Abraham and Isaac worshiped God together on the mountain, giving thanks for His goodness.
Many years later, God would once again provide a lamb, His only Son, Jesus, who would give His life to take away our sins.
DISCUSSION
What would you do if God asked you to give up something important to you?
How can you trust God even when you don’t know why He is asking you to do something?
PRAY
Thank you, God, for being my provider. Thank you for loving me so much that you would give your one and only son, the lamb of God. Help me to have faith and trust in you.
FAMILY ACTIVITY
Talk about all the ways God has blessed you. Make a paper chain and write one blessing from God on each strip. Glue or tape the strips together and hang them on your tree!
