DAY 3
THE GARDEN OF EDEN
So the Lord God drove the man out of the Garden of Eden. He sent the man to farm the ground he had been made from.
-Genesis 3:23
REFLECT
God loved His children, Adam and Eve, so much. They lived in a beautiful garden He created for them, called the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve enjoyed a perfect relationship with God. He gave them just one rule: “Do not eat fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.”
But the enemy, Satan, didn’t want Adam and Eve to stay close to God. Disguising himself as a snake, he deceived Eve and made her doubt God’s loving command. Eve listened to Satan’s lie and ate the fruit. Then she gave some to Adam, and he ate it too. When God came into the garden, they hid from Him because they realized they were naked and felt ashamed.
Anything we do in disobedience to God’s commands is called sin. Because God is completely good, sin cannot be near Him. Adam and Eve’s sin separated them from God. No longer perfect, they could no longer stay in the garden with Him. They had to leave, and the consequence of their sin would eventually lead to death.
But this wasn’t the end of the story. Even in their sin, God had a plan. He promised to send a Savior, Jesus, who would destroy Satan’s power and save us from death by dying on the cross Himself. Through Jesus, we can once again be close to God.
DISCUSS
Why do you think Adam and Eve felt ashamed after eating the fruit they weren’t supposed to?
How do you think Adam and Eve felt when they had to leave the Garden of Eden?
PRAY
Thank you God for being forgiving and kind. Thank you for loving me unconditionally and sending Jesus to pay for my sins. Guide me in obedience today.
FAMILY ACTIVITY
After sin entered the world, God promised a savior. Make a simple ornament shaped like an apple or a heart. You can use paper, felt or even salt dough. On one side, write “Sin entered the world.” On the other side, write “Jesus came to save us.” Hang it on your tree as a reminder that Christmas is part of God’s rescue plan.
